DIGITAL ART
In digital art, the original photograph forms merely the foundation, the intitial "sketch", of the final result. I use a Wacom tablet, a large array of digital brushes, and a variety of software in place of the traditional artist's easel, bristle brushes, and palette. Some of my works, particularly portraits, are quite realistic. Others are impressionistic or even expressionistic, depending on how far I wander from the original reference.

Digital art is part of a strange artistic journey for me. I was an oil painter and watercolorist before becoming a serious photographer. I love the energy, physical movement, and ever-searching eye required in outdoor photography, but I miss the creative flexibility of traditional fine art. Combining the two in digital painting is a special joy.

I am growing this collection slowly, carefully. When I take a photograph that appears to have potential as a painting, I paint - or etch or draw or rub or.... Occasionally I accept commissions to create works from photographs chosen by clients.

You may see pieces here today that you will not see a year or even a month from now. Some become "sold out", either as limited editions or as single paintings acquired as exclusive originals. Others I may retire because I feel they do not match my present standard of work. I try to do this pruning on the basis of artistic standards rather than personal preference, but I do not always succeed in making this tricky distinction. If you long for something you saw before but do not see now, contact me and I will open my archives to you. I know that some work of mine that I hold in low esteem can be wildly pleasing to others. I will not let the critic in me block this pleasure - except sometimes.
