The objects and colors, just as they stand, are hard to believe, and the place has been loved (and photographed) nearly to death. Originality is difficult to achieve.<br/><br/>Whenever there is a <a href="http://chucksalephotography.zenfolio.com/p446282484" target="_self">dramatic shift in the weather</a> (a frequent occurrence, this being Colorado), I am drawn to this place in the hope of some unexpected combination of elements. Fog or <a href="http://chucksalephotography.zenfolio.com/p446282484" target="_self">fresh snow</a> offer promise. Cumulus cloud formations or clear blue-purple skies can help.<br/><br/>However, I used none of these dramatic weather elements to make the images here. Instead, I emphasized the rock flesh of the place, accented in some cases by neutral skies. The trail is well known to those who prefer to explore the remote west side of Rocky Mountain National Park. Knowledge of the place, patience, an early start, and a sharp eye for the play of light in the canyons and meadows are amply rewarded here.<br/><br/>The moose were in rut, and I captured in a brief encounter between competing bulls. I did not have my long lens with me, so I circled around cautiously out of sight and climbed onto a huge boulder that overlooked the animals at close range. The top of the boulder was about 30 feet above ground and not moose-accessible. There I waited, and caught the attention of the female who was the causing all the fuss. She was much larger than my down-angle shot suggests. She was unimpressed with me, and the males were focused on other things. I won't tell you how I got the shots of the big old bull with bloody antlers. A tripod would be technically preferable, but I suffer this technical disadvantage to gain a human one. I need agility and invisibility. The tripod interferes with both.<br/><br/>People are revealed in profound and beautiful ways in their moments of solitude, especially when they are in a crowd or on its borders, and especially when they are not thinking about being seen (or photographed). I stand off unobtrusively and seek for these private moments.<br/><br/>People can also be revealed beautifully in the second or two it takes for them to come out of this solitude and realize they are seen and known and included. I seek for these fleeting moments as well.<br/><br/>Finally, people are revealed beautifully in moments of unselfconscious interaction with others, especially loved ones. Artful capture of these moments can be like photographing a soccer game: The action is fast and the ball is always moving.<br/><br/>Observation effect is a difficulty that plagues the diligent scientist: The very act of observing changes the thing being observed. This is a problem for photographers as well: Some people hate to be photographed while others like it too much. Still others manifest stilted disinterest. It is a path with a long and interesting history, of which I am only a tiny part. Orchard Camp is a place of faded prominence that lies in a canyon about half way to the summit. I took these photographs on an early morning hike from Sierra Madre to Orchard Camp and back. My brother Greg walked with me. He too is a photographer. <br/><br/>My intention was not to find the grand scene.
